BRIEF HISTORY OF HOW YWAM FREIBURG GOT STARTED AND WHY IT EXISTS
YWAM itself has a really long history (which you can read about here: https://www.ywam.org/about-us/history/). Our school, the Mountain Discipleship Training School, had it first go 2 years ago, but pretty much started out of our school pioneer’s vision to combine getting to know God and making Him known with being in the mountains, and being challenged and reminded of God in His creation.
It exists because we believe that God has called us to help people to get him to know Him in the context of nature and outdoor adventure, to disciple people in a similar way Jesus did.
DURATION OF TRIPS OFFERED
The whole school is 6 months in total, and contains several 4-5 day trips, as well as one day outdoor activities
EXPEDITIONARY LEARNING ELEMENTS INCLUDED ON TRIPS
- Daily devotion or quiet times
- Solo experience (either a few hours or day-long solos)
- Teachable moments or trail talks along the journey
- Having participants share their testimony or life story
- Peak climbs
- Rock climbing
- Rafting
- Backpacking
- Practicing and Teaching Leave No Trace Ethics
WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL WILDERNESS TRIP?
A successful wilderness/adventure trip challenges the participants, uses that challenge to teach them something new about God or their relationship with Him, and then makes the experience transferable for real life application…When people didn’t only have a “cool” experience, but something actually positively changed in their lives.
HOW YWAM FREIBURG POINTS PEOPLE TO CHRIST AND HELPS THEM GROW IN THEIR FAITH
Discipleship Training Schools are all about people getting to know Jesus Christ better, and grow them in their relationship to Him. Everything is focused on this – not on cool outdoor activities or the best mountains, but on Jesus Christ. All that is done, whether it is lectures, or work duties, or evangelism, or caving or whatever, the purpose is for the students to know God and then make Him known!
