VISION OF CAMP AMNICON

Amnicon equips people to experience Grace Beyond Their Comfort Zones through adventure-centered programming, life in Christian community, and access to wild places in God’s creation.

Core Values

At Amnicon we…

  • Welcome people just as they are, valued and loved by God
  • Foster a Christ-centered community that affirms the individual and builds meaningful relationships
  • Promote growth, confidence, and change through wilderness challenge and adventure-based camping
  • Model and teach stewardship of God’s creation, and nurture of nature
  • Provide Christian programming that helps participants find faith on the trail and equips them to navigate life’s challenges
  • Develop and train competent staff who plan and lead fun and safe wilderness adventures
Some of the especially important ways we live out these Core Values include:
  • Accepting, welcoming, and including individuals within a wide range of faith and spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof), Christian or otherwise.
  • Partnering with a wide variety of faith-based, community, social service, and outdoor-based organizations that share in one or more of our values, regardless of whether those organizations identify as Christian or religious.
  • Accepting, welcoming, and including LGBTQ+ individuals and groups. We do our best to provide the unique facility accommodations desired by all genders.
  • Recognizing that we own land and have adopted words as our own that first belonged to the indigenous communities that called our land home. We recognize that our native communities were unjustly excluded from this and we are in the process of building education and reconciliation into the life of our organization.
  • Providing free and accessible opportunities for communities of color, recent immigrant communities, and other under-served or marginalized communities so they can experience growth through wilderness adventure.
  • Working to care and steward the land that we own and waters that surround us, as well as making decisions and operating in a way that promotes environmental sustainability for all creation and fights climate change.

WHAT IS A SUCCESSFUL TRIP FOR CAMP AMNICON?

Their most basic goal and marker of success (beyond basics of safety, obviously!) is that every camper knows and believes our mantra–that they are “a capable and lovable child of God.” We see this come true in the ecstatic grin of accomplishment upon finishing a set of rapids (if I can do that, what else can I do?) the coming together of groups despite differences (if you can love me, then maybe God can…)and through the tirelessly loving work of our guides, who live in every moment the truth that each camper, no matter how difficult, is worth their time, their muscle, their patience, and their love.

DURATION OF TRIPS

Trips are typically about a week, including time on trail and time in base for orientation & debrief

COST

$400-$500, with ample camper scholarships made available by our generous donors so that money might never be the reason why someone wouldn’t get to experience an Amnicon trip.

HOW THEY TRAIN THEIR GUIDES

Wilderness Guides are given intensive three-week training, including certifications in Wilderness First Aid & CPR, Wilderness Water Safety, and Mental Health First Aid. They go on two training trips before guiding campers and are given many hours of hands-on training in everything from orienteering, campfire cooking, wet-wood fire building, and how to lead age-appropriate Bible/community discussions. Amnicon has over 55 years’ experience of guiding safe wilderness adventures and has never had a participant lost or seriously injured.
