Understand this Connection to Develop Rapid Decision Making Skills

Thanks for checking out my new webcasts on outdoor leadership! In my last post Leaders are Rapid Decision Makers | 1 Samuel 17, I discuss how David is a model of the courageous and skilled leadership that our world needs today. His time in the wilderness was a key context for him becoming the type of leader who was willing to step into a leaderless vacuum that existed at this moment in Israel’s history. Now we will look at how rapid decision making skills can be developed.

Adventure always brings elements of surprise. In some circumstances quick decisions have to be made in order to maintain safety. Paralysis in decision making can be damaging, especially in a wilderness setting. In this episode we discuss the connection between experience, efficiency, and exposure to help you develop rapid decision-making skills.

HOW TO DEVELOP DECISION MAKING SKILLS

EXPOSURE + EFFICIENCY + EXPOSURE

Decision making happens all the time. Rapid decision making, however, is more of an advanced skill that needs to be developed. When you grow in your ability to make more rapid decisions, you can give your group a sense of confidence and the best, safest experience possible. Advanced leaders are called to lead in times of crisis. Increasing your experiences, efficiency, and exposure to things that test your skills will develop your ability to make rapid decisions. I hope this webcast gives you some insight into the importance of these elements and some ways to develop your skills.

ACTION YOU CAN TAKE

  • Make a dream list of outdoor pursuits that you would like to try. Put a variety of activities, terrain, and even culture on it to increase your experience. Find someone who is better at those activities to do them with you.
  • Identify 3 outdoor skills that you are rusty on (or don’t have) and begin the process of learning to become proficient in those skills.
  • Find an outdoor leader or outdoor course. Have them lead you on an outdoor pursuit where you are going to be exposed and forced to use your skills while under the care of someone.who is more experienced than you.
