Brief History of How Ravencrest Chalet Got Started and Why It Exists
Ravencrest Chalet is part of Torchbearers International, which was founded by Major Ian Thomas, whose ministry began in England after WWII as an outreach to the youth of Germany in post-war reconciliation programs. While traveling the US, Major Ian Thomas was preaching in the Rockies, when approached by a group of Christian businessmen who had purchased the Ravencrest property and wanted to start a retreat center. Since 1976, we have operated as a Bible School and Retreat center in Estes Park, CO. Currently, our summer programs consist of outdoor experience focused youth camps to high school and middle school students. In 2017, we started a program called the Ascension Wilderness Experience, which is a 3-week outdoor, adventure based Bible school, designed to follow after a pattern found throughout the Scriptures, where God the Father, Jesus & Spirit all lead people out into the wilderness for an intense time of transformation.
What Makes A Successful Wilderness Adventure?
A successful adventure trip is one that the participant is challenged in their body, soul, and spirit, whether it be through the physical demands of the wilderness or the interpersonal interactions within the team. When the participant and staff member alike have encountered and experienced the Father, Son and Spirit in the nature, people, or teaching, this is what we consider a success.
