4 Ways Headwinds Build Perseverance | Lessons from Torrential Rain

Perseverance

You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. – C.S. Lewis

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us… (Hebrews 12:1)

Getting wet and running in the rain teaches a lesson about perseverance. While out on a trail run in Tulsa it started to rain and God used it to remind me of some great spiritual lessons.

1. GOD SEES THE BIG PICTURE

What may be a difficult or a negative occurrence for an individual may be serving a greater good. I got wet during my run, but farmers need rain. We can’t possibly see big picture of God’s plan from our narrow focus. God bringing water to the soil is far for beneficial than staying dry during a run. We spend so much time avoiding things that, in reality, can do us much good.  Focusing on physical comfort can make us lose out on so many joys God and nature have to offer. Be more attentive to God’s will and his plan and less to your own desires.

2. GOD IS IN CONTROL

God is most often found outside our comfort zones where we are so reluctant to go. We try to control everything.  We can’t.  Sometimes you get wet and that can be a good thing. Being stuck in rain reminds us of who is in control. If we would accept that, and live our lives that way, we could find true peace.

3. HEADWINDS BUILD PERSEVERANCE

A headwind on a run adds to the difficulty and challenge. Just because there is a strong headwind doesn’t mean you should skip your run.  It just means you have to work harder, which happens to be the only way to get stronger and build perseverance. Maybe that is one reason we have troubles in life.

4. LIVING WITH GOD GIVES JOYFUL PERSPECTIVE

Focusing merely on myself, I would have thought, “That run stunk.  It rained and wind blew in my face.  My shoes got wet.  It was miserable.  It hadn’t rained for months and it has to rain when I run!” By focusing only on ourselves we miss out on the many blessings God provides. Praise God for sending rain after several dry months. I am so thankful it rained during my run so I could face this lesson on perseverance!

REFLECTION

How have you have seen God radically shift your perspective by spending time with him in solitude?
